Serious Head Injuries Prompt Recall of Bumbo Baby Sitter Seats – New Warnings and Instructions to Be Provided To Consumers

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Bumbo “Baby Sitter” Seats

Units: About 1 million

Manufacturer: Bumbo International, of South Africa

Hazard: If the seat is placed on a table, countertop, chair, or other elevated surface, young children can arch their backs, flip out of the Bumbo seat, and fall onto the floor, posing a risk of serious head injuries.

Incidents/Injuries: CPSC has received 28 reports of young children falling out of the Bumbo Baby Sitter seat, including three skull fractures, which occurred when children fell out of chairs that had been placed on tables.

Description: The bottom of the children’s seat is round and flat with a diameter of about 15 inches. It is constructed of a single piece of molded foam and comes in yellow, blue, purple, pink, aqua, and lime green. The seat has leg holes and seat back that wraps completely around the child. On the front of the seat in raised lettering is the word “Bumbo” with the image of an elephant on top. The bottom of the seat has the following words: “Manufactured by Bumbo South Africa Material: Polyurethane World Patent No. PCT: ZA/1999/00030.” The back of the seat contains the following “WARNING” – “Never use on a raised surface. Never use as a car seat or bath seat. Designed for floor level use only. Never leave your baby unattended as the seat is not designed to be totally restrictive and may not prevent release of your baby in the event of vigorous movement.”

Other than talking about the bumbo seat, I have also created a page and another blog for my 2 girls to watch them grow. Do visit us at

  1. i bought our bumbo seat from Toys R us in Pavilion south africa last year August, my son 6months old came out of his bumbo seat yesterday, and yes it was on a flat surface on the lounge floor, sitting there watching him arch his back and push himself out and flip over and fell flat on his face and hit his head.

i am not one of those careless mothers who left my child unattended, so now for me no more bumbo seat and my son loves his seat. what do i do now?
what year were they recalled from and are they still being recalled?

    • Shelly, if your son can sit up by himself he doesn’t need the Bumbo seat.

  2. Just like all things, your child will out grow this seat. If your child has developed the ability to sit on their own (hence the stronger back muscles) then it is time to stop using or they will try to get out. But the same goes for any baby product that a child outgrows. If they have outgrown it, it is no longer safe to put them in it. ie. car seats, bouncers, walkers high chairs ect…. The idea is to know and watch your children and when you see that they at the threshold of out growing, you stop using whatever product it is. My son used/loved his from about 3-6 months. After that, he could get out, so we stopped using. NEVER had any problems.

  3. i have a bumbo seat and wood like to know how
i can go about returning it or exchanging it i was not aware of it till one of my friend told me it was a recall item looked it up and it has all the same wordings. i have stopped using it cause i am afaraid my baby will flip over and fall. cann you send me instructions on what i can do to having it exchanged? 956 504-5038 /956 5455288 are the numbers you can reach me at. thank you

  4. I didn’t know there was a recall and yes, my baby today-ontop of a tall table (one with barstools), flipped out of her bumbo and fell on the floor-head first. I was preparing her food, looked up and there was no way I could get to her that fast. I have been watching her, scared to death. I used the bumbo for feeding her, but not anymore. It is a great seat=ON THE FLOOR ONLY. I see all of these ppl using them on counters and tables and all of that and no, it is not good. NOT good at all. And it’s when you don’t think YOUR baby will get out that Your baby will. I’m so mad at myself. I should have known better. My poor baby.

    • Liz, I hope your baby is okay and that you took her to the doctor to be checked since she fell on her head. The box says to be used on the floor only, and only until they are able to situp alone, by then their backs are stronger to support themselves.
Don’t be to hard on yourself we all make mistakes as parents. I just hope your baby is fine.

  5. There is no exchanges being given. They are just having people come back in to put a sticker on it. They said it was completely safe if used correctly.
